Although Adriaen Van Ostade and his younger brother Isaack are mainly known for their peasant groups in interiors, they were initially exceptional landscape painters. Perhaps they were encouraged in this by the strong Haarlem tradition in that field. It has also been pointed out that the strong light/dark interplay in the landscape and the use of earthy colours suggests the influence of Rembrandt.
