The work of Yayoi Kusama is populated by dots and phalluses. The dots stem from the artist’s childhood, when she dreamed that she would disappear in a world full of dots and stripes. She initially made the phalluses out of fear of sex, later out of fascination. This shoe is filled with phallic forms, so that it becomes a symbol of men’s sexual fantasies and simultaneously plays on female sexual fascinations (and fears).
