Through several trips to Paris (together with Sluijters in 1911) and from what he saw at exhibitions, Gestel was well informed about news movements such as Fauvism and Cubism. He fused the two in his own work, dissecting visible reality into facets while massively increasing the colour brightness. This style reached its apex in the thrilling landscapes he made in 1914 on the Spanish island Mallorca. This work, probably an evening landscape, is more muted in tone.
