    Dear Jade, thank you for your question. Unfortunately we do not have a conclusive answer. The colour of the ink is brown, but it could have been black once. To be certain a chemical analysis of the ink should be made. There may have been written about Rubens' practice and the ink(s) he used, so you could do some research in the extensive literature about the artist. With kind regards, Els
