Les Pampas

Ask anything

  • viola asked

    cosa rappresenta?

  • Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen answered

Dear Viola, the interesting thing about this work is not so much what it represents but rather how it was made. As a surrealist, Max Ernst was interested in images created by chance, unconsciously, and he invented all kinds of methods and techniques that excluded rational thought and logic. In this case he put his paper on the floor, rubbed with his pencil and let the structure of wooden floorboards 'decide' how the work would come out. Then it is interesting, of course, how our brain is searching for something recognizable and meaningful. In this case, I think, most people would agree that we see some kind of landscape. Kind regards, Els
