The installation Respect is inspired by the reality of life in Rotterdam-Zuid, where Erik van Lieshout lived and worked at the time. In the video he tries to find a boyfriend for his gay brother. The work has a highly personal starting point, but deals with broader social themes such as tolerance, cultural difference and gender identity. The replicas of Rietveld chairs, icons of art history, are combined with Oriental rugs, plastic ventilators and a soundtrack by the American rapper 50 Cent.
