Ask anything

  • Fernando de Tovar asked

El grabado la "Huida a Egipto" tomada de J Jordaens y publicada por ustedes forma parte de un libro. ¿Que libro es? Estoy restaurando una pintura sobre cobre inspirada en ese grabado.
    Saludos

  • Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen answered

Dear Fernando, This print is bound in a copy of the following Staten Bible edition:
The complete Holy Scripture... Adorned with many beautiful Figures..., Amsterdam (Theunis Jacobsz. Lootsman) 1643. With 125 bound illustrations (117 prints, 7 maps, and a 'Catechism'), each approximately 40 x 50 cm (image).
For clarity: The Bible itself was printed in 1643. The prints were added shortly afterward, either by Lootsman or another bookseller, or by a wealthy buyer, no later than 1650. They must have been acquired from the artist and publisher Claes Jansz Visscher.
The prints are therefore not standard in all copies of this Staten Bible edition, but only in this particular copy. Later editions of the Staten Bible were also often provided with the same series of prints, but not as a standard feature; they were added at the request of the Bible buyer. I hope this answers your questions. Kind regards, Els
