This work was painted in 1657 for the Marquis of Soncino in Milan, who commissioned several paintings from Guercino. It probably remained in the family for a very long time, and it is not clear how it subsequently reached the Netherlands. It was sold at auction as the work of an unknown artist in 1952, when it fetched three hundred guilders. It was not until 2015 that it was recognized as a Guercino during a valuation.
