The identity of this man in the fur-lined toga cannot be determined with certainty, but he has been identified in the past as the Leuven scholar Gemma Frisius (1508-1555) and more recently as the Haarlem author and translator Cornelis van Beresteyn (1517-1595). In any case, it looks like the person portrayed must be a humanist with a thorough knowledge of Latin and Stoic philosophy, because the inscription in the upper left corner and the globe with the four seasons in his hand refer to constant change.
