Anton Mauve was one of the best-known masters of the Hague School. His pictures of sober heathland were extraordinarily popular. His was an art of greys and browns, of tone, not colour. But when he moved from The Hague to Laren he discovered a very different palette, of which this vegetable garden with its lush greenery is a superb example.
