As with landscape painters, the art of the 17th century set the standard for later painters of flower still lifes. Following his move to Paris in 1822, Van Os achieved great success for his paintings of richly varied bouquets. They call to mind the work of great predecessors such as Jan van Huijsum and Rachel Ruysch (in gallery 19), but the cool tone and classicist entourage of vases on marble plinths betray 19th-century tastes.
