The painting shows a view of the Romanesque nave of the St Jans Church in Utrecht. In this, the pillars have not been alternately demolished, which took place in 1658. Left is the Antonius Chapel, with the coat-of-arms of its founder Dirk van Wassenaar. The drawing that Saenredam made on the spot is dated 15 September 1636 and hangs in the Kunsthalle in Hamburg.
