Considering the dimensions of this 'Mountainous landscape in the evening', the depiction with its calculated decorative effect and the broad brush strokes must have been part of a wall covering, probably for an Amsterdam patrician house. Around 1650, it became fashionable in the Netherlands to fill whole walls of a room with landscape paintings. It is known that Adam Pijnacker also painted such wall coverings.
