A group of cows is reflected in the water. Green meadows stretch away into the horizon. An enormous grey cloudy sky occupies more than half of the canvas. The artists of the Hague School, of which Roelofs was one of the forerunners, were inspired by the Dutch landscape art of the Golden Age. They depicted the everyday Dutch landscape with easy brush strokes, emphasising the distant horizon and the dark Dutch skies.
