After Pilate's interrogation, Christ is tortured. A crown of thorns is placed on his head and a reed in his hand. He is mocked as the 'King of the Jews' (Matthew 27:26-31). Over the centuries, scenes from Christ's Passion such as his mockery have inspired compassion in many believers and stimulated their devotion.
