This engraving is one of a set of five prints featuring kitchens and
markets, each with a scene from the Bible in the background. In
this case, there is a tiny illustration of the parable of the rich man
and the poor Lazarus. Scenes like these were a speciality of Pieter
Aertsen (‘Lange Pier’), who supplied the designs for three of the
other four prints.
