This painting is made by the same artist who painted ‘Portrait of a boy in shepherd’s costume’. The work is dated as ‘1632 D V S’. Since the two panels are pendants, it can be assumed that this girl’s portrait was made in the same year and by the same painter. It is not, however, possible to ascertain for either painting who that must have been. Dirck Dircksz (van) Santvoort is generally named as the maker. Recently, however, this attribution has been called into question and there is a tendency to refer to the artist as 'Monogrammist DVS’.
