This nocturnal scene of a procession of flagellants bears not the slightest resemblance to any other work of Ter Borch’s. The attribution, though, is solid. In addition, contemporaries report that he had visited Spain, where this kind of public penitence was very common. It is a mystery what persuaded him to employ his art, which is otherwise so humane, to depict such a bloody subject.
