Willem van de Velde de Jonge painted this work shortly after moving to London, as is shown by the signature: 'W.V.Velde.in Londe 1673'. In that year he entered the service of the English king Charles II together with his father Willem van de Velde de Oude. Father and son would remain in England until their deaths, but would paint and draw many scenes there featuring Dutch ships.
