Ask anything

  • Rachel Artenian asked

What is the significance of baby Jesus holding the claw bells?

  • Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen answered

Hi Rachel, When you have a close look at the little painting you see that in the mandorla around teh virgin angels are making music with all kinds of instruments. The artist probably gave Jesus the bells, since these are an instrument which a little baby can play easily. Kind regards, Els

  • Anna asked

Hello, what is the condition of this panel? Many thanks!

  • Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen answered

Hi Anna, the panel is in good condition for exhibitions within the museum. It is housed within a climate box for extra safety which is why the frame is quite wide. Best, Lisa

  • Edith Weinstein asked

    Hello there,
Would you tell me the measurements of The Glorification of the Virgin by Geertgen tot Sint Jans, and the technique, I assume it is on wood panel?

  • Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen answered

Dear Edith, the measurements are 24,5 x 20,5 cm and the technique is oil on panel. You could have found this information yourself by scrolling down and clicking the blue button 'show more detail'. Kind regards, Els

  • Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen answered

  • Annie Imbaud asked

Bonjour, Where is the Glorification of the Virgin by Geertgen tot Sint Jans during renovations? Is it on display in another museum? Thanks for your answer! Best regards, A.I.

  • Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen answered

Dear Annie, This work will be on view at the Wereldmuseum in Rotterdam from 1 October 2019 until 3 January 2021, and it has also been selected for the exhibition 'Best of Boijmans' at the National Gallery, from 27 March until 18 July 2021. It is pretty likely to also be included in other travelling 'Best of Boijmans' exhibitions, but these plans are still in early stages. All the best, Rianne

  • Lee Lancaster asked

What is written on the banners that some of the angels are holding? Thank you! This painting is beautiful and the symbolism striking. God bless you.

  • Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen answered

    Dear Lee,
The word on the banners is “sans”, short for sanctus. The sanctus is a hymn in Christian liturgy and the Latin word for holy. It refers to the holiness of the Virgin.
    Kind regards,
    Esther

  • Introduction

The panel depicts an adoration of Mary as a sum of various Bible texts. The vision shows Mary seated on the moon sickle and crushing the dragon under it. She is circled by angels with musical instruments and the instruments of the passion. The visionary character is strengthened by the heavenly light surrounding mother and child. This depiction of Mary refers to the Revelations of St. John 12:1: 'And there appeared a great wonder in heaven; a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars.' The panel was originally part of a diptych. The other panel is in Edinburgh and depicts the crucifixion of Christ.
