May I kindly ask how this painting is related to the Louvre composition, which was catalogued as Lucas van Leyden https://collections.louvre.fr/ark:/53355/cl010061568
And why you catalogue your version as after Patinir. Do we know today who is the inventor of the composition?

Dear Stéphanie, thank you for your question. I have asked our curator of old art and he says that from the 6 known versions of this composition, the one in the Louvre is considered to be the original one. The painting which is kept in our museum - 2456 (OK) - is directly based on the Louvre painting, the other 4 are based on the Boijmans painting. The Louvre painting was originally considered to be a work by Lucas van Leyden – why is not very clear, but probably because of some vague reminiscences with van Leyden's graphical work. The way the painting is executed, however, directs to an origin in Antwerp. Some authors, therefor, suggested Patinir as the artist, especially because of the landscape. There are, however, many deviations from the rest of Patinir's oeuvre and that is why we now consider the painting to be a work by an anonymous follower of Patinir. I hope this is helpful.
