Man in a Tall Hat

Ask anything

  • Yvonne J Foster asked

What is known of Man in a Tall Hat?

Where was the Man in a Tall Hat from?
Can you tell from his clothing his status in society or his occupation?
Considering the types of people Brouwer painted is it probable that the Man in a Tall Hat lived locally or is it more likely that he is a traveller?
    Thank you so much

  • Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen answered

Hi Yvonne, your questions are very interesting, but unfortunately we know very little about this painting. It was painted in Antwerp around 1630, probably not so much as a portrait, but as a character study. The clothing suggests that it would be a craftsman, or at least somebody from the lower middle class, and at the same time it seems to be somebody who distinguishes himself from the average (by his hat). I am sorry that we cannot give a more helpful answer. Kind regards, Els

More information

In this study Brouwer concentrates on one of his specialisms - the painting of ‘affects’: capturing a model’s various emotions and facial expressions. This painting must have been very populair in the seventeenth century as it was published as a print in two editions in quick succession.
