Supper at Emmaus

Ask anything

  • Stéphanie Schwill-Egli asked

Dear Madam, dear Sir, I would like to know more about the provenance of the Supper at Emmaus and its attribution to Paolo Veronese. Could it be that it is the version mentionned by P. D'Achiardi in his book "La collection Messinger", Rom 1910, p. 227ff as by El greco?
Thank you in advance for any additional information on this painting.
    With best regards,

    Stéphanie Schwill-Egli

  • Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen answered

    Hi Stéphanie,

Thank you for your question. There's multiple versions of this work, 3 in total. The one we've got in the collection is said to be the only one fully crafted by Veronese. It belonged to a British collection, not to the Parisian one you've mentioned.

You can find more about it following this reference: A.W.A. Boschloo & G.J.J. van der Sman (eds.), Italian paintings from the sixteenth century in Dutch public collections, Firenze (Centro Di) 1993, pp. 109-111, cat. 106.

The work you've mentioned was auctioned in Zürich in 2020, https://www.schulerauktionen.ch/en/items/156-3100-caliari-paolo

    Hope this answers your question,

    Kind regards,
    Gianni

More information

The Venetian master Veronese is best known for his large colourful wall and ceiling paintings. On this small canvas he depicts the biblical story of the supper at Emmaus. Only when Christ blesses the bread do his fellow diners recognise him.
