Ask anything

  • Adelheid M. Gealt asked

Does the museum know the early provenance of this fine work? thank you!

  • Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen answered

Hi Adelheid, This is what we know about the provenance of Golgotha by Tiepolo. From 1738 to 1762, this painting was in Venice and belonged to the collection of Joseph Smith, British consul at Venice, patron of artists such as Canaletto and a collector. The collection was dispersed after his death and most of the artworks were brought back to England. Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen came into possession of the work through D.G. Van Beuningen's substantial donation in 1958. Best, Mara

More information

Reference has often been made to the possible influence Rembrandt's 'Descent from the cross' had on the work of Domenico Tiepolo. From 1738 to 1762, this painting belonged to the collection of Joseph Smith in Venice. Indeed, there is a certain similarity with the work of the Dutch master in the shape of the cross and the contours of the thief on the cross to the right.
It is not out of the question that Tiepolo's canvas was one of a series of passion scenes.
