Courbet painted the orchard of his father near his birthplace Ornans in 1873 as a kind of parting gift. In that year, he was banished from France because he had been involved in pulling down the pillar on the Place de Vendôme during the Commune of 1871 (the socialist movement that ruled Paris for more than two months). This pillar symbolised the reign of Napoleon III.
