Fantin Latour’s modest still lifes were appealing to international collectors during his own lifetime, and his work is still popular. His flowers painted from life could have been picked in one’s own garden and are all very beautifully observed. A few carnations in a glass of water: Manet could also have painted them, but his would have been sturdy. Fantin let them be fragile.
