Ask anything

  • Tutu HU asked

Could you possibly provide me with the provenance?

  • Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen answered

Hello Tutu Hu, Thank you for your question. This painting has entered the collection in 1964. It had been part of the collection of the Solomon Guggenheim Museum in New York and was auctioned at Sotheby's together with ten other works by Kandinsky which were also acquired. This painting was originally owned by (the widow of) Herwarth Walden. I hope this information helps you. Kind regards, Els

  • Conor Quirke asked

Dear Conor, This painting is in oil on canvas indeed, and the dimensions are: height 101 cm and width 79,3 cm. You can find the dimensions on the website by scrolling down and then click on 'show more details'. All best, Els

More information

Kandinsky's work changed radically between 1910 and 1914. He moved from narrative scenes to a completely free and abstract visual language. This 'large study' is a highpoint in this development. It is a light hearted explosion of colours, lines and forms with no clearly recognisable subject.
This expressiveness is typical of Kandinsky's early abstract works. In later years he worked with more geometric forms.
