This is one of Rembrandt's most impressive and most experimental prints. The scene is not etched with acid but is scratched directly onto the copper plate with a needle known as a drypoint. The lines are angular and expressive. Figures emerge here and there in the darkness. Only Christ on the cross is bathed in light. Here, Rembrandt was not concerned with details but with creating a breathtaking effect.
