The detailed studies relate to Watteau’s painting ‘Les comédiens Italiens’. The drawing on the left was used for the boy at the extreme
lower left in the composition. He looks at his own hands making a garland. The hands were drawn in a separate study. The artist combined black and red chalk; the red chalk was used mainly for the hands and face.
