Watteau prepared his paintings in an unconventional manner. Instead of making a composition sketch and the individual studies for different sections, he used ‘plein air’ studies of landscapes and individual figures made earlier. He used the four studies of soldiers resting, made during military manoeuvres at Valenciennes, in his painting ‘The Recreations of War’.
