Manet probably wrote this letter to Mrs Jules Guillemet in the period that he rented a house in the spa town of Bellevue on the River Seine to the west of Paris. In this letter he offers her the last plum from his garden, illustrating it at the top. He sent such illustrated letters to other friends as well. The other sheet with five plums, but without text, also came from the Guillemet collection.
