Cézanne made a vast number of such drawings, which were intended exclusively as studies. This sheet includes a portrait of his wife (top), a sketch of a man walking after an academic model. Lower down and likewise rotated 90 degrees there is a sketch after a detail (the man climbing) from a print by Marcantonio Raimondi, which reproduces Michelangelo’s design for his fresco ‘The Battle of Cascina’.
