This is a sketch after the central falling figure in a large oval ceiling painting by Paolo Veronese depicting 'Jupiter Hurling Thunderbolts at the Vices' (circa 1554-1556). This was originally in the Doge’s Palace in Venice, but Cézanne studied it in the Louvre, where it has been since the Napoleonic era. This sketch probably came from a sketchbook with more sketches after Veronese.
