Women figure prominently in Renoir’s oeuvre. He made many studies like this one of housewives going about their daily tasks. This young woman, bending forward, rests her left hand on what appears to be an iron. Her right hand is pressed between her thighs. It is a rather odd pose which evidently so appealed to the artist that he captured her in this swift chalk drawing.
