From 1876 onwards, Cézanne often worked in the little village of l’Estaque on the Bay of Marseille. It is one of the most picturesque spots near Marseille. The fierce sunlight and the intense colours in the landscape that changed dramatically throughout the day fascinated the artist. He used this study of roofs in a painting some years later. The drawing corresponds with the section in the painting below right.
