Giambattista, father of Domenico and Lorenzo, is the best known of the three Tiepolos. He thoroughly prepared his huge compositions of many figures by means of drawings. He also drew in order to build up a stock of studies on which he was able to call as and when he wanted to. This is such a study drawn from a model. Tiepolo often used blue paper because he could apply white chalk highlights to it to increase the plasticity of his figures.
