Study for the Kneeling St Catherine and a Situation Sketch for the Same Figure in 'The Mystic Marriage of St Catherine', from the collection of Musée du Louvre, Paris.

This is one of the preparatory studies for the ‘Sacra conversazione with the Mystic Marriage of St Catherine of Siena’, an altar piece that Fra Bartolommeo painted for the church of San Marco in Florence. In 1512, the city council of Florence, for whom Fra Bartolommeo carried out many commissions at that time, decided to purchase the monumental altar piece and offer it as a diplomatic gift to the departing French ambassador Jacques Hurault.
