On 26 November 1510 Fra Bartolommeo was commissioned to paint an altarpiece for the Sala del Gran Consiglio in the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence. The composition and the figures were drawn in monochrome shades before being executed in colours. The painting, which was never completed, is in the Museo di San Marco. A number of preliminary studies for this commission have survived, seven of which are in the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen. They give a good impression of the artist’s working methods. At the top of the painting of the painting float seven cherubim, four holding musical instruments. This is a preliminary study for the cherub on the far right, who is playing a lute. There were no fewer than ''sixty-four sheets of children in black and white' in Fra Bartolommeo’s estate. The artist also drew several versions of this figure with variations in the poses. After using them in paintings, artists kept studies like these for possible reuse later. [text: Albert Elen]
