Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen owns almost all of the graphic oeuvres of three great 18th-century Venetian masters: Piranesi, Canaletto and Tiepolo. This is thanks to J.C.J. Bierens de Haan (1867-1951), who bequeathed his collection of 26,000 prints to the museum. He also left a large sum of money to establish a fund for the acquisition of graphic art (the Lucas van Leyden Foundation). Piranesi is best known for two sets of etchings: the ‘Carceri’ (prisons) and the ‘Vedute di Roma’ (views of Rome).
