De Jode was one of the skilful engravers who interpreted Van Dyck's drawings for the 'Iconographie'. Compared with the drawing, which is quickly rendered in black chalk, the engraving is finely detailed with great attention to the rendering of materials. An oil sketch probably served as the example (modello) for the engraver.
