This drawing is part of a series of five sheets (inv. nos. MB 289-293) on which a total of 26 members of the Bentvueghels are portrayed. The Bentvueghels was a brotherhood of artists from the Northern and Southern Netherlands who united in Rome.
The portraits date from around 1623, the time when the group was founded. Both their own names and the nickname they were given when they joined are written on the sheet. The portraits were perhaps made after the founding meeting.

Portraits of Five Bentvueghels: Joost wt den Haech alias Schotsen Trommel, Cornelis van Wtrecht alias Satir (Cornelis van Poelenburch), Wouter van der Gouw alias Almanack (Wouter Pietersz. Crabeth II), Tyman van den Emster alias Botterkull (Timan Craft),
