A Three-Decker

Ask anything

  • Dieter Biela asked

    Hello,
I found this picture stating that the ship is the ROYAL KATHERINE of 1664. Is this correct?

  • Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen answered

Dear Dieter, According to our registration system the ship is not modeled after an existing one, but created by the imagination of Willem van de Velde. It has an inscription in Dutch saying this: "vervolgende schepen heeft van de velde/naer eijgen fantazijen geordineert/& geschiert", which means that he designed and decorated it from fantasy. Another inscription says that he imagined a few English ships including the Garland. I hope this is helpful. Kind regards, Els
