Vanderheyden made use of small items as stamps for his embossing. They are all items that are to do with painting: the lid of a paint tin, frame jibs, angle brackets to join the frame and the slats together and hooks and eyes with which the painting can be hung on the wall. The two compositions with blocks in the middle are prints of sketches.
