More information

Corot probably made this drawing in 1835 while staying in the village of Chailly-sur-Bière, to the north of Barbizon in the Fontainebleau forest. The drawing may have been made in situ, perhaps at Bas Bréau, a place that appears in two small paintings by the artist. Corot often drew and painted outdoors and is considered a precursor of the Impressionists. His students included Manet and Berthe Morisot.
