Dürer’s work following his first trip to Italy is characterised by a hybrid of late Gothic and Venetian stylistic elements. Late Gothic is the framing of the scene with gnarled branches and elements heightened with gold. The composition as a whole shows clear similarities with the paintings of the Venetian Renaissance master Giovanni Bellini of the period 1480 to 1490. Because Dürer used relatively expensive parchment for this minutely detailed drawing, it was probably intended as a precious work for private devotion.
