This type of vase with lid was used to serve candied chestnuts. The very smooth design of the bodies is remarkable. The relief band is decorated with alternate reclining griffins and palmettes. These patterns are closely associated with trend-setting designs by the French silver smith M.G. Biennais. The design sketches for these chestnut cases have been preserved in the company archives of the Bonebakker company.
