Noted on a separate sheet of paper: ‘A finch with two heads,
sitting on a branch in a landscape. The bird was caught on the 2nd
of October 1747 in the finchery at the Ykenhorst estate, outside
the Hague Woods, the property of the Honourable Burgomaster
Dierquens. Skilfully drawn from life in watercolour by A. Schouman
…’ Whoever wrote this note had been duped - an examination of the
original in 1918 revealed that the second head had been sewn on.
