Goya was a passionate draughtsman as well as a productive painter and printmaker. He produced eight albums of drawings, each with its own individual character. This drawing of an old woman dancing comes from an album that was made after the end of the Spanish War of Independence. The numbers, titles and independent character of the drawings in this album suggest that they might have been intended as designs for a new print series along the lines of the ‘Caprichos’
