Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen is working towards digitising the entire collection in order to make it accessible to the public online. Currently around 25 per cent of the collection can be consulted online.

The Museum System (TMS), re-assessment and photography

To catalogue the collection and publish the data online, the museum makes use of The Museum System (TMS). From 2014 until the July 2018, the museum is carrying out a re-assessment of the collection. The project encompasses the entire collection with the exception of works on paper. Through this project, the museum will soon be able to publish a large proportion of the objects online with up-to-date information logged in TMS and a registration image or a professional photograph. The data for the website Boijmans Collection Online, which was launched in 2016, is generated by TMS. The museum has also begun a large-scale photography project with the aim of producing professional photographs of as many objects as possible. For this project, the Documentation Centre is paying extra attention to authors’ rights. Before objects can be published online, copyright has to be cleared. The eventual aim is to make the entire collection accessible online.

Digitising Contemporary Art (DCA)

From 1 January 2011 to 2013, Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen worked on the project Digitising Contemporary Art (DCA) for Europeana. For this project, the museum photographed 425 important installations, sculptures and assemblages by contemporary artists. These artworks are now accessible to the general public via the Europeana website. Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen presents more than 5000 art objects on Europeana. This portal gives the public digital access to the cultural heritage contained in European museums, libraries, archives and audio-visual collections.

ALMA - Art meets Artefacts

In 2011, Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen launched the website alma.boijmans.nl. In 2016, this website was integrated with the Boijmans Collection Online.
ALMA links images of pre-industrial household objects from the late Middle Ages to the 19th century with paintings and prints in the collection that depict similar objects. The ALMA Database can be searched extensively via the website, and various research results are published in the ALMA Showcase. See the page about ALMA at Boijmans Collection Online.
