Our monumental museum building turned out to be in such a poor condition that it could only be saved by a complete renovation. It is an immense operation, which will take no fewer than ten years to complete. Although closing the museum is the last thing we want, it provides a unique opportunity to completely reconsider the building. To apply all the knowledge we have built up over 175 years about what makes a museum successful.

Following a period of intensive discussions between the museum, the Municipality of Rotterdam and the architecture firm Mecanoo, it is now up to Francine Houben and her team to make a preliminary plan to renovate, restore and ensure the sustainability of the existing building and the associated outdoor spaces. The brief is therefore not to design an entirely new building, but to realise a high-quality restoration and renovation of the museum complex. The basic principle here is to honour the building’s status as a historic monument.
